psych_30 prompt of the same name: "separation anxiety."
His knock is answered almost immediately.
When Juliet opens the door, a wary expression settles onto her face, her body straightening up. "Is something wrong?" She looks over his shoulder.
"Well …" He pauses to lick his lips. "I got all settled in and found I was hungry for dinner, then realized … I don't know jack about cookin'." He holds out his hands in a gesture of helplessness.
Juliet throws the door open wide. "Oh really." There's the hint of a smile in her voice.
As if he’s actually offended: "Yeah, really." James ducks inside and closes the door behind him, but pauses for a moment in the foyer, unnerved. It is exactly like the house he has just settled into – same layout, same light bulbs, same crappy yellow wallpaper. He knew that; it still unsettles him.
"Well, come on." Juliet motions and he follows her into the kitchen.
"Considering that cooking here in Dharma-ville consists of following the directions on the package," she says over her shoulder, her tone dry, "I'm starting to think you must just enjoy my company."
James chuckles nervously.
She pushes an apron against his chest.
He grins and slips the neck strap over his head.
"I don't blame you," she adds after several seconds' silence. “There’s a saucepan in that cabinet,” she adds, pointing. “Fill it halfway with water.”
He chuckles and does as he’s told. "Mighty full of ourselves tonight. What if I just happen to think you make great mac-and-cheese?" He smiles winningly, turning on the tap.
She smiles right back, not won over in the slightest. "My secret ingredient is,” she says in a low, conspiratorial voice, “… I dump a can of tuna in it."
James grins and quirks an eyebrow. "Is that so."
